1No video output from iPhone 4- Cause: faulty cable  May 16, 2011 By PhilM
I'm not sure if I got a faulty cable or a recent software update has messed up the video out, but this cable is only outputting sound. I've tried two iPhone 4, and an iPod touch (most recent generation) on three different TVs and none of them worked. Message that pops up on the screen says "device not optimized".

UPDATE: I exchanged this cable for the "old version" Apple Component AV Cable (OLD VERSION)[Retail Packaging] and it works perfectly. I read on several sites that there was a large batch of the cables that were faulty. Make sure you keep your packaging! There is no pop up message when I plug it up, and when you go into itunes to play a video, it says, "playing on TV".

In short, I think a quick way to determine if you got a faulty cable would be to plug it in and play a video in iTunes. If it doesn't say on the iPod/iPhone screen that it is playing on the TV, don't bother hooking it up.

4Great Picture, Poor Design  Mar 31, 2011 By Sarah Belle
I've had these cables for about 2 months now and they are fantastic! I have an iPhone 4 and stream netflix all the time (grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T). The quality is pretty darn good. I use it on a 55 inch LED tv, 32 inch LCD, and a 19 inch LCD. All great!

I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the connectors design. Like most other reviewers stated, they are hard to grip and transfer from tv to tv. But if you only use this on one tv, it's 5 star worthy!

3Mostly for Movies, iTunes video, and Audio hook up to Amplifier  Mar 24, 2011 By Epsilon Delta
This component cable will output movies, music, slideshows, YouTube, iTunes University video, etc, to a TV.

It will not output many of the apps, such as Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Epic Citadel. Apple store's message was: "it is app specific", but many apps I tried, it won't work. I hope Apple's website has more info about it.

Individual photo viewing will not show, but slideshow will.

The above was tested using iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPad 2.

Note that for 100% mirroring, iPad 2 with an HDMI cable is said to work.

I got the component cables so that I can record gameplay, but it won't work -- I have a box that records component video/audio signal into a computer file, but iPad apps are not showing the video. If using an HDMI cable, there isn't a recording device I am aware of that can take HDMI signal and record it. The other way seems to be using a VGA output cable from iPad, and then using a VGA recording box that can record the video signal to a computer file.

So the real use for me is for watching movies, but I have a computer hooked up to the TV already, so even for iTunes Univ videos, I can use the computer and run iTunes and stream it to the TV.

I just hope on Apple Store's website, a more detailed description is there so that customers can make a more suitable choice for themselves.

1cable does not work with ipod classic  Jun 06, 2011 By PaulC
I tried to get the cable to work with 2 ipod classics, both ipods are video capable and have TV out switched on. As other customers have reported, I could get the audio to work, but no video signal. I had called Apple customer service prior to purchasing the cable and they had confirmed it is supported with the models of ipod classic I have. I called them again to get some advice on getting the cable to work but they could only suggest I return the cable. I had no choice but to return the cable to Amazon.

2Questionable Quality  Jun 07, 2011 By GPVonde "Nate"
We purchased these cables to be able to watch Netflix, slide shows, and video via our HD television. We have both an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. We encountered one major operating problem and one moderate design problem.

Operating Problem
First, we could not get the cables to work at all with the iPhone 4 and only partially with the 3GS. In troubleshooting the issue, we cleaned the connectors, made sure the latest software was installed, tried a few suggested fixes, but to no avail. What we did discover is that there is a significant group of iPhone users - especially those with iPhone 4's - that cannot get these cables to function. Whether it is a flaw in the production of the cables themselves or the phone is uncertain. Because it did work partially on one phone, I am inclined to think it is either a hardware or perhaps even a software glitch in the phone itself. That's why I didn't give the cables just 1 star.

Design Problem
I do have to say, for simple cables, Apple paid a great deal of attention to the overall look of the product. They have a nice looking tubular stainless steel sleeves on the connectors with attractively recessed color-coded inserts to indicate which cable goes where. The cables fit very snugly into the RCA-style outlets. And that is great. But - and this is a big but - if you ever plan to detach the cable from the back of your device, it is very difficult. Because of the snug fit and super-smooth stainless-steel tubes, you just cannot get a firm grip. Wiggling the wire seems like it would damage the cable, so you have to yank and wiggle the tubes until they finally come loose. I read that some use pliers to get the connectors off the back of their TV.
