5Works great!  Jul 12, 2011 By Chris I.
I bought this video player before a road trip for my 3 year old son to use in the car. Overall, I have to say that it works great. I used the Open Source software Handbrake to convert some of his children's DVDs to video files (MKV with h.264 video codec). I then copied the files to the player using the included USB cable which was a little slow due to the nature of the maximum speed of a USB 2.0 connection, something you don't think about until you are actually copying nearly 8GB of files. Once the files were copied over, the video playback on the device was excellent. I was a little concerned that I wouldn't be able to fit many of his shows onto the internal 8GB memory, but I was able to convert more or less full DVDs into ~850MB files, but most of the DVDs which are not full converted into files about half that size. I was able to fit lots of these into the internal memory. I bought an extra long USB cable at a local electronics store to be able to charge the player in the car while he's watching it, but the battery has been so long lasting that we haven't actually had to use that.

Notes/concerns:
* The manual states that the maximum size microSD card supported by the player is 16GB. This limitation should be mentioned in Amazon's product description.
* The buttons on the device itself are a little awkward to use for navigating the menu structure of the user interface.
* Some of the menus in the user interface (particularly where you configure device settings) show icons, but no text. This makes configuring the device more difficult than necessary.

Aside from these issues, the device works great, and I didn't feel that these issues were big enough to warrant reducing the rating from 5 stars to 4 stars.

5Excellent for the price!  May 09, 2011 By Lexa111
This thing play 99% of the codecs which you can find on a market this days. MKV, AVI, MP4, XVID it's even play DVD files quality of display is excellent.FM radio, MP3 player and E-Book reader: PDF,EPUB,FB2. FB2 is the best , most comfortable for this machine. What else you can wish for $110. It's a steal! The only con. you have to brake big MKV files to a small one. And a small internal memory, but you can extended with Micro SD card. And it's not touch screen. But again it will coast you a $100:-}}}

5Great Player  May 05, 2011 By Altros
I bought this player a little over a month ago and I love it. It works as advertised. I use it on the train to watch videos and movies. It has a really nice picture and the screen is big enough to see, but small enough to be light. I even read PDF books on it.

5Wonderful!  Apr 05, 2012 By NHS Hani
There hasn't been a single movie format that this media player wasn't able to play. I'm serious. Whether you wanna connect it to your HD TV (which is my preferred mode of us) or you wanna use it for a plane ride, or even a car ride, this is certainly the product to go for. I couldn't find anything else on the market which did what it does. It is important to point out that it is not touch because I thought it was when I bought it, but it is still very easy to use.

4AN ELEGANT MP3 PLAYER, AND MUCH MORE!  Feb 25, 2012 By Dennis Renfro
The COBY MP977-8G is an MP3 player on steroids! Wow! I wanted a high-quality digital player that would handle MP3 and FLAC files. This goes way beyond. The unit plays digital videos in hi-res on its excellent 7" LCD screen. You will probably want to use the memory expansion slot to install a 16G MicroSD card. (I urge you to get a 'Class 10' card for speed and performance).

Sound quality to any external source is SUPERIOR. FLAC files play perfectly, and they sound like you are in a studio or concert hall if they've been properly recorded. Yes they take up lots more memory than straight MP3's, but if you have material in this format, the COBY will do it justice. Playing this through an external amp with high-end speakers is one option. Using quality headphones is another. Also, for ultimate portability, the included sound isolating earbuds are perfect.

Video played on the internal LCD screen is amazingly clear and detailed. Output to a 1080p or RGB destination is functional. I had POOR results trying to feed a video signal to my 1080p display. One problem is the mini-hdmi connector on this unit. It is easily disconnected from the unit, and has problems maintaining a signal to your destination source.
I would rate the NTSC signal output (you provide the cable connection) as good.

Battery life is adequate (about 3 hours for movie watching at full brightness). If you don't need to have the screen displaying an image, then use the internal menu to have the display turn off while playing your music. Battery life in this mode is greatly extended, ofcourse. I like the number of adjustments that can be made from the operating system menu. Everything from brightness, sound equalization, image detail parameters, etc. can be adjusted with a little practice.

The screen is NOT a touch-sensitive design. Everything is accomplished for operating this unit from a few input buttons. The placement of these buttons can be somewhat problematic at first. I have found that it takes a short "learning curve" to master quick operation, but it is really a pretty easy system.

Data transfer to the unit, through the USB transfer cable, is straight forward from Windows 7. Read the manual carefully. It is not a GREAT manual, but adequate. So far, I have had few issues with this little player. The FM radio works, but there is a lot of static when you are setting channels, so it is hard to hear if you've found a good signal. Must have ear buds/phones as an antenna to work. It would not be rated as a "DX" FM receiver, so closer to a broadcast station is definately better.

My major happy discovery was this unit's ability to play e-book files. Acceptable formats are limited, but files can easily be converted on a regular computer to a format acceptable to the COBY. You also have full color photos, maps, etc. if such are part of the e-book file. Really a cool (bonus) feature to supplement a Kindle or Nook, etc.

If you want a multi-tasking, resonably-priced multi-media unit, with great portability, this is a great choice. Check out the Amazon Warehouse to see if you can get a like-new unit (translate as really a new unit, with full warranty) from them. I received a perfect unit, absolutely new, for one half the price of the local discount store. The external package had a minor flaw.
