The FiiO L3 is designed with a 3.5mm stereo jack to Apple's dock connector, enabling output of high quality line-level audio from iPod, iPhone, and iPad that can be sent to portable audio equipment such as headphone amplifiers and power amplifiers. Designed with high-quality materials, the L3 isolates the audio signal from interference to deliver cleaner and more accurate sound from your iPod/iPhone/iPad. The L3 employs the new HPC-22W cable with ultra-fine PCOCC-A conductors for its exceptional signal transmission property and usability. Twenty strands of 80?m PCOCC-A wire are unified into a bundle and three bundles are grouped as a conductor that is geometrically stable. This construction method ensures uniformity of wire structure, eliminates internal gaps, and prevents deformation of wire strands. Each conductor in the HPC-22W is jacketed with 0.18mm PFA (Teflon), a material selected for its outstanding electrical and transmission characteristics. The shield/ground consists of 53 strands of 0.12?m PCOCC-A wire, with cotton rope filling the internal space and providing additional tensil strenth. The outer jacket is made of TPE olefinic elastomer. Works with iPhone 4 Oct 14, 2010 By A. Corson
Searched high and low but could find no direct statement that said the item worked with iPhone 4's dock. Bought it on chance and was pleasantly surprised it worked without a problem. The reason I questioned its functionality is that my other LOD I use with my 5th generation iPod does not work with the iPhone 4. I knew the pin outs changed at some point in time in the evolution of the ipod dock but couldn't recall the specifics. This get more confusing when you consider that my USA spec car stereo interface can go between my iPhone and iPod with no problems. Enough about connectivity.

The device clips in well to the iPhone's dock and is slim enough to work easily with my phone cover without interference. A small strain relief supports the cable where it exists the dock connector. I was expecting the cable to be a bit thicker since this is a step up from the Fiio L1. None the less it has good flexibility to permit connecting back to a headphone amp with a 180 degree turn. The fairly small and slim 1/8" connector has an over-molded plastic housing that seems to be slightly rubbery (high durometer TPE maybe). Not sure how well this plug will hold up over time but it should do just fine unless you plan on jogging with a headphone amp and need this sort of connector (don't think many people do that anyways). No real comments on sound, it sounds like a solid line out connection to me. I expect people that will notice the biggest differences using the LOD would be those that use high impedance or low sensitivity headphones with mild or low power portable amps fed by the headphone output of the iPhone. In this scenario you may have the volume high on the iPhone and over driving its amp (more distortion, less headroom). With the line out, you're only at the mercy of the headphone amp.

Happy with this purchase and would recommend. Just about everything on ebay competing with this ships from Asia and takes a long time to receive; not to mention higher costs. This is shipped locally in the US and from an established manufacture.

Great, inexpensive LOD for my iPod nano. Worked flawlessly, seems to be well made. The connector to the iPod itself fits in snugly, and it is held in place with spring-loaded buttons on the side that you press to release it. The cable terminating in the mini-jack seems to be of good thickness and quality, with lettering on the side that says "HPC"--which I can only presume to mean high-purity copper (a nice touch). Only downside (hence 4 stars) is that the cable isn't very long, maybe approx. 4", forcing my iPod to sit very close (and out of reach/sight) of my car's mini-jack input. I'll be looking to get an extension for this otherwise excellent product!

Not 100% iPhone 4 compatible Nov 22, 2011 By K L
The hooks (w buttons to release) that are meant to secure the iPhone side of this plug do not fit the iPhone 4 and consequently the plug easily moves slightly out of its socket. The iPhone then stops playing and warns that "this accessory is not designed to work with this iPhone".. I have also gotten this warning several times when the plug is securely plugged into the socket.

Update: I noticed the connector edges were butting against the tiny Philips screws on the iPhone 4 frame next to the connector. By trimming off a little plastic on each side of the FiiO LOD connector, it can be inserted a tiny bit further and the hooks now attach reasonably securely. Updating from 2 to 3 stars. This would have been so easy to fix at the factory/design stage.

Worthwhile for the price Aug 13, 2011 By Audiomaniac
This is a worthy upgrade from using a standard headphone output which has a much lower grade sound quality, especially in devices like the Ipod that have a significantly lower quality headphone jack. This L3 bypasses the headphone jack completely and feeds the audio straight from the sound card into your headphone amp or line out into your receiver. It was indeed worth the investment, but not for portability if you get the long cord version! I ordered this cord expecting it to look like it did in the picture, being perfectly sized to bundle with a portable amp for portable use. However, what i received was the same unit but with a 2-foot long non-adjustable cord. Plugging it in to my headphone amp leaves a great bundle of excess cord that is completely unnecessary and completely non portable. My audiophile set up is already becoming a bigger and bigger clutter of wires and devices and with this L3 it becomes completely impractical to the point where i would bite the downgrade and use the standard small cable that came with the Fiio E5 headphone amp and plug it directly into the headphone jack.

For portable use: This would have been a fantastic upgrade in sound quality if the cord was the right size! Make sure you are getting the small cord version that fits nicely with your portable amp/dac and mp3 combo.

For home use (with long cable): What are you doing buying a L3? There are much better high quality cable choices. The short cable l3 is a great value but if you dont plan to use it for portable use than i dont believe this is a wise choice.

Sound quality itself: This L3 cord bypasser upgrade was a great deal more pleasurable to listen to music straight from my mp3 player and amp/dac combo than the headphone input! The highs and mids were cleaner and more sparkly, and the bass felt more intact and balanced with more punch and less muddiness.

At first i couldnt tell much of a difference between this and the headphone jack but with a more engaged listen and some more time on my hands i found this to be heavily superior!

Buy it!

Why the FiiO L3 is better than the FiiO L1 Apr 14, 2011 By R. Davidson
I have used both the L3 and the L1 and the L3 is decidedly better because it is much sturdier, and most importantly the connector to the dock is much better. With the L1, you pretty much just pull the dock connector out, without much of a "squeeze" to release. The L3 connector has the actual squeeze sides which makes you feel you are releasing it with less stress on the dock. You definitely do not want your dock to get wonked.

I decided to try this when one of my L1's channels went out, and I would not buy the L1 again. Sound wise, I can't really tell much difference although others have said this is better. I suppose for twice as much money you would want it to be.

For those who don't like the short length - there are 3 and 4 foot cables out there for use in cars. You don't need to pair this with an extender.
