Just what I needed to dock my iPhone 3Gs Jan 26, 2010 By Conor P. Cahill
I needed a nice docking station for my iPhone 3Gs and this seemed like a good match. I use one of Nutshell's leather belt clip cases, so I wasn't worried about any potential case issues.

The dock looks great. Very sleek and metal (not plastic), though it does have rubber pads to keep it from damaging your desk. I took the included cable and hooked it up (you have to pop out the cable holder on the stand, slide your cable in and then lock it in place with the holder). They are very emphatic about you not using the Apple cable (which has the locking clips) since you want to be able to slide your iPhone or iPod Touch on and off without worrying about such clips.

At first, my phone wouldn't plug in. Problem ended up being that the cable is labeled backwards (the connector symbol which is normally on the front of the cable connector, needs to be on the back)... I have the black unit, so I don't know if this is limited to the black cable or to any of the cables. Anyway, that was easy to figure out and fix.

My iPhone sits in there without any issues and is able to sync data and charge.

Update: 12/22/2010: FYI... I've been using this same dock with my iPhone 4 for the past 5 months or so without any problems.

I bought this for my iPhone 3G and it worked great - even with various cases. However, it does NOT work with iPhone 4 with an Apple Bumper - nor with the other 3rd party cases I've tried.

Now with the included cable, I think this is a really good value over the previous model. It looks good, improves the sound and does what I need it to do: gives me a bedside stand that, most importantly, works without having to remove my case.

What more can I say? It's a squiggly piece of aluminum. Alright, it comes with some removable rubber feet (I presume for non-slip and to protect the surface you put it on) and they can come off easily and be lost. Maybe they should throw in an extra pair just in case...

UPDATE: For what it's worth, as I worried would be the case, I did indeed lose the rubber feet that came with this, but after contacting the manufacturer they were kind enough to send out 2 sets of replacements. I applied a drop of Krazy Glue KG58548R Instant Krazy Glue All Purpose Tube 0.07-Ounce to each and haven't had a problem since.

UPDATE: 2/3/12 - Upgraded to a 4S with a Marware Sport Shell Convertible Case for iPhone 4 - Black - Fits AT&T iPhone and I'm now gonna have to find an alternative as the case is not compatible with this cradle. Afraid the case is more important to me!

Will iCrado work with your iPhone case? It depends... Jun 07, 2010 By BEK
With my naked iPhone it worked fine, but I really got this with the intention of using it with an "encased" iPhone.

The iCrado didn't work "out of the box" with my iPhone cases. That said, I can totally believe it works with other iPhone cases. It should just depend on your exact case.

I optimistically purchased 2 iCrados because I saw more "It works with my case" reviews for it than any other iPhone dock and the pictures led me to believe that the "dock connector" stood up much higher than most with docks. Yes, I did see a few "doesn't work with my case" reviews but I gambled it would work for me. It didn't work initially but with a utility knife I managed to do make adjustments to the iCrado and to my case to make it work.

MY TWO IPHONE CASES: I have an Otterbox Commuter TL and an Otterbox Defender. I use the Commuter TL most of the time and the Defender in more rugged situations.

Here is my analysis of issues my cases had with the iCrado.

1) RUBBER FLAP ON CASE? Does your case have a Rubber flap covering the docking port at the bottom of the phone? My Otterbox cases do. I normally like such a flap because it helps protect the phone's port from dirt and debris but it is one reason why my TL wouldn't initially work with the iCrado (and likely any currently available dock). I had not realized this. DOES THE FLAP HINGE TOWARDS FRONT OF PHONE OR BACK? The flap on the Commuter TL folds back and the Defender folds forward. Folding forward is better with the iCrado since there is little space in the back of the phone when docked and it just wouldn't sit right. In the end I CHOSE TO CUT THE FLAP OFF of my OB Commuter TL so that I could get it to work with the iCrado. If your case has such a back-folding flap you may have to get rid of it to work with this (and perhaps any?) dock.

2) CROSS SECTION OF THE iCrado's "WHITE PLASTIC OVAL". By this I mean the plastic white oval you see when staring straight down onto the metal "prong" of an (Apple) docking cable. Once you have slipped the included cable into the iCrado's plastic insert, that oval is effectively larger which can cause problems if your case only has a small window to fit the cable through. The effective "oval size" is roughly 1/16" to 1/8" larger in each dimension compared to a current Apple cable. UPSHOT: If a regular "Apple" cable just barely fits into your case's port "window" you might have trouble using this dock (as delivered) with the case on. I ended up detaching the plastic insert and (carefully) trimming the left and right edges with a utility knife to allow it to fit through the "window" in my Commuter TL case.

MY OTTERBOX COMMUTER TL: I got this case to work with iCrado ONLY AFTER the (destructive) "ADJUSTMENTS" to the case and to the iCrado (see above).

MY OTTERBOX DEFENDER: The flap on the Defender folds forward so that's not the problem that it was for the Commuter TL. But the "window" for the Defender is even narrower and it would require additional trimming of the iCrado plastic part to get it to work (and I haven't tried it so I can't even be sure it's possible). So far I've decided that I just won't use the iCrado stand with my Defender (which I don't use most of the time anyway).

Works as advertised (hence the 3 stars) however a few things really really bug me.

1. The iPhone sticks up higher than I'd like. I'd like the connector to be recessed a little bit lower.

2. The silver isn't what it looks like in the Amazon photos. Sitting next to my alum Macbook Pro and my alum keyboard, this cradle looks more like cheap silver spray paint. It's brighter, and more reflective. It's almost enough to return it, if it weren't for the fact that it works well.

I'd recommend getting black or another color, if you think the silver should match your other Apple products.
