3The App Kills This Thing...  Mar 29, 2011 By R. Matheson
So, I'm a big Tron fan. Duh. You kind of HAVE to be to drop this much cash on what basically amounts to a speaker. All in all, this thing sounds good. But here is the rub, and the rub is pretty huge:

The app (which ostensibly opens up new worlds of control and Tron-themed interface awesomeness) is junk. At least, for the time being (more on this later). The instruction manual for this dock indicates that the app includes an equalizer, alarm clock, and choosable visualizer themes, presumably Tron-related. IN FACT. Take a look at the picture of this item. See the funky Tron-esque hexagons graphic on the iPhone screen? Looks cool, right? Same graphic is on the box. Guess what? It's nowhere to be found. Not in the app.

The app in question is the Disney Tron app, not a "Monster Visualizer" app as advertised. So basically every time you want to use the lighting effects on the speaker (where it pulsates to the music and whatnot), you have to open the app (which is designed for landscape use, so the Tron and Disney logos appear sideways when the phone/pod is docked), navigate to the Visualizer (the menu in question is also inconveniently sideways), and select the visualizer. But here's were it gets even better. Their "visualizer" is basically a very plain looking lightning backgound. Their iPod interface is an extremely dumbed down version of... well, the ipod interface. You can select only playlists. You can't select podcasts from this interface. It is for this reason that I avoid the "pulsing lights" functionality because the non-impressiveness of the lighting effect does not make up for the absolute pain-in-the-rear head-cocking drama required to effect it. T

The icing on the app cake is, every time I plug my phone into the thing, the phone pops up a window that says "This device requires an app you have not installed. Would you like to install it from the app store?" There's a whole lotta stuff wrong with this window. First of all, the app is INDEED installed; the phone or dock doesn't realize this fact. EVERY TIME I PLUG THE PHONE IN, it insists that the app isn't in there. Secondly, when I hit "yes" to the "let's download the app from the app store" dialogue, it takes me to the app store's main page; not to the app itself. So even if I HADN'T already installed the app, there is no clear direction to go for people who just want their multi-hundred dollar speaker to work, and not have to search for the app that allegedly makes that happen.

I bought this thing for one reason: The alarm clock. I want to be woken up with booming sound. There is NO alarm clock on this thing. There is a clock. A slightly hard to read Tron-fonted clock. But no alarm. No "wake up to music" feature. No equalizer as advertised in the manual. A single "visualizer" theme, which is irritating and useless. The manual is insufficient and largely incorrect with regard to the app. Aside from the missing features, there's also no instruction on how to ACCESS these features. The app is basically a footnote in the manual. And the Monster functionality is essentially a footnote of the app.

One other somewhat irritating trait. When you're pushing "buttons" on your phone (or ipod; whatever), the phone (pod) is a tiny bit loose and taps against the upper disc part of the dock. Maybe this is unavoidable, but it feels cheapish and I'm hoping the movement is not damaging my phone's interface hole. The buttons on the dock are not lit all of the time, and unless you know them by touch, there's kind of a "hunt and click" paradigm there. I once tried to increase the volume and ended up fast-forwarding. Curses.

Now for the somewhat good stuff. It does sound very nice. It looks nice, but it can tend to light up a room, especially if located next to the bed. You can turn that off, though. I am using a seperate alarm clock app with this dock and it is effective if not ideal. It wakes me up with booming sound; a submarine diving klaxon, which is quite awakening; especially if you're a submarine movie enthusiast like myself. The remote is...cute...(risking man-card revocation here) and effective.

More good news. After AN HOUR on hold with Monster Tech Support, it was revealed to me that the Tron app is due for an update in April 2011. The tech did NOT tell me what will be included in this update; I can only hope the update addresses these fatal flaws with this device (or at least its interface). If the upcoming update does improve the situation, I will of course update this review and hopefully the subpar "star-scores" I have given this unit. Seriously... it's a lot of money for a speaker. And that's really all it is. Unless you desperately need a bedside night light that casts everything in a baby-blue hue.

4Missing a few little things  Sep 11, 2011 By Conrad Thonger
I will start by saying that I love this audio dock. The look makes my inner geek very happy and my ears enjoy the quality of sound coming out of it.

However, I would have hoped that it would do a little more out of the box. In order to get the LEDs to change in time with the music, you MUST have an app from the iTunes store on your device and it must be active. There is nothing wrong with that, but I would have liked it to be able to so some simple LED patterns without the app or when I don't feel like having the app running, and then give me MORE options when I do have the app running.

I am giving it a 4 out of 5 purely based on what's missing. The Tron Audio Dock is a solid 5 of 5 for everything else, especially sound quality.

4Beta Test?  Mar 10, 2011 By Alexander Liu
Simply put, the Monster Tron dock is just a really cool dock to look at, whether you're a Tron fan or not. For me, one of the highlights of this dock was the sleek, minimalistic design that would fit nicely at home, whether that be in Flynn's apartment, or at your own. Once you unbox it, the dock itself is pretty intuitive, providing the user with a cool light show once you connect your iPhone into the grid (ok, end of the line for my lame Tron-related puns!).

Speaking of the 'light show', however, it is unfortunate that the many of the functionalities boasted on the packaging as of writing seem to be severely lacking, making the purchase of this similar to subscribing to a beta test of the product. There is no option to choose from a variety of sequences for the light show (unless you count static and pulsing to the rhythm), there are no varied backgrounds that display on your iphone during the lightshow (there is only one, unless you count the 'clock'), and while the previous two may be nitpicky, there is no way to deny the glaring omission of any kind of 'alarm clock' feature; a feature so prominently featured in advertisements and on the packaging itself.

With that said, the dock itself is once again an undeniable thing of beauty, assuming minimalistic and futuristic designs are your kind of thing. Seeing it lighting up a darkened or dimly lit room almost makes up for the 'beta-test' state of the app, giving you a nice bluish tint that lights up a room just so, making it perfect as a night light.

It is perhaps then only natural that the dock loses some of that shine (pun intended) in a well-lit room, looking very bland once a white glaze replaces the blue-glow. The dock was no doubt designed with a dimly lit room in mind, which makes the design of the remote control a puzzling one. Sure, it looks cool, with the aesthetics of the dock carried over along with the Tron-theme, but one would assume that if you were to use this dock, it would be in a dark room so you could enjoy the light show, so wouldn't it be only natural for the remote to at least glow in the dark?

Alas, the remote does not. Which makes it a pain having to find an alternate light source to illuminate the buttons if you plan on using the dock in a dark room.

The remote has a pretty straightforward layout, with the inclusion of a Playlist/Clock button, and a Light Show button. When I pressed it for the first time, I thought it would give me a cool little display, however the end-result was underwhelming. The dock flickered to life, the lights spun around in circle, brightened, and went back to a static display. All that took about 3 seconds, which I am not sure warrants inclusion on a remote.

It would be unfair though to say that the rest of the 'light show' the ones not marked on the remote, are a pretty cool affair. When the dock powers on, the inner ring (which also doubles as a volume meter gauge) flickers to life and traces a clockwise path, while the outer ring joins in. Powering the dock is just as cinematic and visually impressive, the rings trace another path, flicker, and then slowly die down. . It's all very dramatic, very Tron-like, and enough to awaken your inner child.

Now, I'm no audiophile, so I can't comment on that aspect of the dock as well as some of the other experts, but to my ears, it does a decent job. Not amazing, but still good for a speaker that small.
Listening to music while the rings pulse to the beat is hypnotic, almost like having a disco-ball of the future. Now if only they'd do something about the painful app, which has too over-promises, under-delivers, and constantly nags at you to install the app everytimme you connect to the dock, regardless of the fact that it IS running.

I'd say this dock deserves alot of praise, but unfortunately just not yet. There's a brilliant product waiting to shine though, but it's still rough around the edges with small details keeping it from being perfect. If you're a Tron fan, a minimalist fan, or even just a fan of the quirky and futuristic, I'd definetly recommend it. After all, isn't beta-testing part of this techno experience?

UPDATE (April 1, 2011)

The above was accurate as of writing. However, as of March 31, 2011, the iPhone Tron app has been updated with the promised functionalities of an alarm, an EQ, and a second visualizer(or in layman's terms, clock backdrop). The new visualizer is simply a black screen with blue-ish snow(?) falling down, and the EQ offers three options; flat, electronic, and user-defined. The alarm itself gives you four options; three loud electronical, droning alarms, and the option to select your own music to wake you up with.

What I like about the alarm is that even when the iPhone is locked and the dock is in sleep mode, the app will wake both when the alarm works. Yes, *when* it works. More on that below.

Unfortunately, this app is still marred by technical issues, and it crashes quite frequently. It is an amazing addition to the dock, nay, it MAKES the dock when it works. However, press one too many buttons and the app crashes. Select 'music' after fiddling with the alarm clock settings and the app goes down. But perhaps the worst offender of them all is the base unreliability of the alarm clock. On my trial run with the app, it worked only half the time. The other half, the alarm would come to life, but no sound would play, either on the dock or out of the phone. As such, I'm wary of depending on the alarm to do its job.

However, I do believe that in the near future these kinks will be worked out, and if so, this is the app that should have been available with the dock in the first place. These updates makes the dock one that is well worth purchasing, if and when the minor issues are resolved.

4Groovin' to the Grid...  Jan 06, 2012 By Erik Olson "Seeker Reviews"
I saw the original "Tron" movie during its theatrical run, and it was one of the influences that nudged me into the IT field as an adult. The recent sequel was fun as well, and when I noticed the Monster Tron Light Disk Audio Dock on Amazon I immediately coveted it. The dock finally became mine once the price took a nosedive on Cyber Monday, and it rocks.

I use the Monster at work to keep my iPhone 4 charged while playing background music. It fits nicely into the dock, Verizon case and all. You can control the action using buttons on the dock or with the included touchpad-style remote. A free Tron app is available on iTunes that helps your iPod/iTouch/iPhone interface with the Monster dock and lends functionality and ambience via five functions: 1) A Clock/Visualizer, 2) Alarm Clock, 3) Equalizer, 4) Visualizer Setting, and 5) Light Setting.

How does it sound? In a word, nice! It has four 1.5" stereo High-Throw Drivers and a 3.5" Long-Throw Woofer. I'm not sure exactly what that means technically, but I like it nonetheless. Even at low volume I can get my work done while easing on-the-job stress with Pink Martini or various lounge/chill music albums. Plus, the dock just looks spiffy in a techy sort of way, especially the pale blue lighting on the disc's inner and outer rings that pulses to the music.

Issues are minor so far. Even after updates, the Monster Visualizer App can be touchy at times (it crashed as I was trying a function while writing this review), and its playlist feature doesn't show artist names for some reason. In addition, I'm not sure what I'll do if/when the light strips burn out on the disc. But the sound is great (even my coworkers agree), and the Tron theme makes this dock a perfect geek accessory.

5WELCOME TO THE GRID!!!  Feb 02, 2011 By Matthew Thompson
The Monster TRON iPod Identity Disc Dock can be described in one simple word...

INCREDIBLE...

Where to start? The Packaging alone is impressive and sleek. When you open the box, the dock is protected from scratching by several easily removed plastic sheathes.
The design is just awesome. The material used is a shiny black resin that looks like it literally jumped off the Grid!!

If you are a TRON fan... You will FLIP OUT over this!! If you are not... You will FLIP OUT over this.

The lighting effects are dead on in terms of their TRON world authenticity. The soft blue color of the lights with a white mixture is quite impressive as well.

You can keep the Disc lit up at all times if you wish. A sleek, stylish design around the Disc only enhances the look. Well designed... A fan boys dream... This Identity Disc Dock is AWESOME!!

THE TRON SYMBOL LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM FRONT PORTION OF THE DOCK ITSELF LIGHTS UP IN "TRON'S" WHITE COLOR FROM
'TRON LEGACY', WHEN YOU HIT THE LIGHT EFFECTS BUTTON ON THE REMOTE... THIS ALMOST BROUGHT ME TO TEARS OF JOY!!!! Seriously...

The remote control is very cool. Small and convenient. The TRON SYMBOL on the lower half of the controller is a giddy plus for fans.

THE SOUND OF THE SPEAKERS IS JUST AS IMPRESSIVE. The woofers are clear, sharp and don't crack when you crank it up. The bass is impressive for a product of this size.

TRON LEGACY is an incredible movie. Disney never messes around with product tie ins... But MONSTER has simply hit a grand slam on the Grid with this one. Top to bottom... On or off. The dock is gorgeous to look at, and will provide many a smile for fans of TRON LEGACY, the original TRON, and music lovers alike.

WELCOME TO THE GRID!!! Great job Monster!!!!!
