| | Description | The NuForce Icon Mobile is a portable headphone amp with a built-in USB DAC. With your iPod, the Icon Mobile uses its line-level audio input for improved audio quality. With your desktop computer, the Icon Mobile uses its USB input for a substantial upgrade in audio performance. The NuForce Icon Mobile gives you much better sound quality from mobile music players, smart phones, and personal computers. Mobile is a rechargeable, high-performance headphone amplifier with adjustable gain and stand-alone USB DAC offering support for Skype, Messenger or similar microphones. Due to cost constrains and power consumption considerations, mobile devices such as an iPod or smart phone do not incorporate high-performance headphone amplifiers. The Icon Mobile's optional iPod connector lets you bypass the iPod's volume control. The compact, lightweight Icon Mobile, which can drive a variety of headphones, connects to these devices via 3.5mm stereo input. Connected to a computer via USB, the Icon Mobile can drive a pair of powered, speakers. The external 3.5mm stereo input, when inserted, takes precedence over the USB DAC. This function lets you listen to music from sources such as an iPod without having to disconnect the Icon Mobile from the computer. The Icon Mobile sounds better for several critically important reasons. Among these are a heavily filtered power supply, a DAC that's been implemented for optimal performance, and a circuit designed to drive low-impedance headphones. Last but not least, unlike digital volume controls, the Icon Mobile's high-quality analog volume control does not compromise resolution. A gain select switch provides compatibility for a wide range of headphones and earphones. Headphones impedance between 16 ohm to 300 ohm are suitable for use with Icon Mobile. | |

Mighty Mite May 08, 2009
By B. Shivers
"music man"
I have not stopped smiling since I received my NuForce Icon USB DAC. I listen to my downloaded computer music for at least 6 hours every day; 5 days a week. I have been trying to upgrade my music files to higher bit rates. I purchased high quality ear buds to get better sound. Each has made small improvements to my listening experience, but nothing compares to the HUGE improvement in sound quality that I got when I purchased the NuForce Icon USB DAC. 2 words immediately come to mind. Clarity and impact. I noticed both on the first song I played. It is unbelievable what this little DAC did to the music. I was hearing instruments and sounds that I had never heard before in some of the songs that I have listened to hundreds of times before. Truly amazing product and it's only $99. It will not perform miracles, however. Garbage in/garbage out. If you have really poor quality music files; it can only do so much. If, like me, you listen to a lot of music on a computer, you have got to try this little Mighty Mite. I am truly blown away.

Great Deal If You Understand Concept Oct 19, 2010
By schuds Do you wish to use full-size headphones with your iPod? If yes, the Icon Mobile is your ticket to great sound. If you have no intention of upgrading from you standard Apple buds, don't waste your money. If you want some to the best possible sound from your iPod get yourself full-size headphones (Shure SRH-840, Audio Technica ATH-M50 etc etc etc), a line-out adapter and lossless ALAC files ripped from CD. These few steps will make your iPod sound like a $3K full-size sound system. No kiddin'. The sound explodes. You'll wonder how you ever listened to the crap coming out of standard buds. The Icon Mobile is a great entry-level mobile amp, however it's not the best $100ish DAC you can buy. I would advise buying the Icon Mobile for iPod amp use only; it's not the greatest USB DAC. If you want the best low-budget, high quality USB DAC I highly recommend the NuForce uDAC-2, it's sweet beyond words. The best audio bang-for-the-buck I've ever experienced.

Great starter DAC/Headphone Amp Mar 20, 2009

What an awesome lil product for $100! Dual purpose of DAC and Headphone amp, couldnt ask for more. I primarily use it as a DAC to my Audioengine A2 speaker. But the real deal is when you use it as a headphone amp. It just sounded brilliant with the Grado SR60's. The mid's are well balanced and the peaks as well. Also, great customer service - if you have questions, email them and very quick response.

Nuforce Icon Mobile Jan 09, 2011
By Javier A. This is a great product and an excellent first buy for the headphone amp novice, I dont regret it being my first headphone amp. The little switch for selecting gain broke immediately, even when I used the tool they give you for it, but I'm not fussing since I plan to use it only for my Grado Prestige Series SR80i Stereo Headphone and not in ear headphones.

Excellent for the Money, Very Resolving & Detailed Sound Apr 12, 2009
By Choe Chang Ho I bought this little amp a week ago and since then have been running in for around 100 hours now. Overall sound quality with my UE Triple.fi is very very detailed and a little sharp, and the soundstage is surprisingly wide. Its DAC is great, clean & very resolving. When used with analog input, the SQ is just a little inferior to the DAC sound. Soundstage gets somewhat narrower and less detailed. And I found mini-to-mini connection with my iPod Touch 2G seem to sound tad bit better than when I use an LOD connector, contrary to the general belief that an LOD connection should sound better. But when I check output sound at different frequency levels using Sound Check app. on my iPod Touch 2G, LOD connection produce more pronounced sound at all frequency range. So I am still not quite sure. Highs are extremely detailed and sharp, lowest lows sound bassy, but mids and mid-lows are a little weak, so the vocals may not sound very charming. USB connection is susceptible to electric noise, depending on the USB cable used and at the same time on the USB port used. So you need to check it first. I think it may not be recommended for headphones like my AKG K701 as the sound is not delicate enough on them. P.S.: The cello on the Icon Mobile sounds just amazing. I can hear all the textures of the strings and the vibrations. Some of the higher quality stereo cables don't fit as they have wide diameter and the input port is a little recessed.
